As Democrats, we often get frustrated with our own party. When our leaders don’t come through, like we counted on them to do.
But there’s still a big difference between the two parties. And if you don’t believe that, look what happened Thursday in the U.S. Senate.
Up for a vote: emergency health care relief for those men and women, first responders – mainly cops, firefighters, and paramedics – who rushed to Ground Zero on September 11 and stayed on the scene as long as necessary – some of them for weeks and months.
Because of the toxic fumes they were breathing in, many of them became deathly ill. Legislation sponsored by Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillebrand would have provided them the lifelong medical care they need.
But Senate Republicans shot it down. Because, they said, it was just too expensive.
And that vote itself tells you what the Republican Party is all about: cruel, shameless, heartless.
In the same day, they refuse to spend one dollar to help 9/11 responders.
But they’ll spend $800 billion dollars to give tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans.
One more reason I thank God every day that I was born a Democrat.
That’s my parting shot for today.
