Thought-provoking insights from the left side of the political aisle.

9-9-9 – Yes-Yes-Yes, It’s A Con Job

October 14, 2011

9-9-9: It’s the slogan of the day!

9-9-9: It’s the answer to our prayers!

9-9-9: It’s the solution to all our problems!

9-9-9: It’s the biggest con job ever foisted on the American public.

Herman Cain’s solution to everything – from inflation to violent crime to prostate cancer – 9-9-9 – sounds simple. And it is. What it means, for almost everybody, is: your taxes will simply go up.

And especially for the poor and middle-class. Because, on top of whatever local and state sales taxes you’re now paying on every purchase, you’ll also be paying (to start with) a hefty 9 percent federal sales tax. Which, in some areas, would add up to a 20 percent total sales tax.

And that’s going to hurt people who shop at Wal-Mart, Target, or Costco a lot more than those who shop on Madison Avenue.

What’s stunning is how many people believe Herman Cain’s got the answer, just because it’s got a nice ring to it – 9-9-9 – without taking time to figure out what it really means.

Herman Cain is the P.T. Barnum of American politics.

And, if we fall for 9-9-9, we are the suckers born every minute.

That’s my parting shot for today.
