All the way to Madison, Wisconsin, and back this weekend – and everywhere I went, all people were talking about was Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize.
It did, indeed, come as a shock and surprise. Most of all, to Obama himself. He didn’t even know he’d been nominated. And even top White House staffers, when they heard the news, admitted asking: “What for?”
Of course, Republican idiots responded true to form – demanding that Obama refuse the honor. But they’re just jealous, because no Republican since Teddy Roosevelt has won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Did they seriously think George Bush would get it for invading Iraq?
In the end, it was Obama himself who put it all in perspective.
He’d accept the award, he said, not for his accomplishments – because, so far, he couldn’t claim many.
But he’d accept the award on behalf of the American people – as a “call to action” to end war, eliminate nuclear weapons, lift nations out of poverty, and put an end to global warming.
And he’s right. He may not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, but we do. Because we were smart enough to get rid of George Bush – and elect Barack Obama!
That’s my parting shot for today.
