Blanche Lincoln’s victory in Tuesday’s run-off was surprising. But the White House reaction was even more surprising.
No sooner was she declared the winner than a “senior White House official” called several news outlets with this gloating statement: “Organized labor just flushed $10 million of their members’ money down the toilet in a pointless exercise.”
What a stupid thing to say.
The fact is, as Senator, Blanche Lincoln consistently opposed key elements of the Democratic agenda, including a public plan option. That’s why progressive groups, including several unions, went looking for a real Democrat to take her place.
The fact is, they found a strong candidate in Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, who was willing to fight for working families of Arkansas and America.
And, even though they did not win, unions got their message across: that Democrats can no longer take them for granted. If any one Democrat won’t deliver for working men and women, unions will find another Democrat who will.
No, unions did not “flush their money down the toilet.” They spent it wisely and well.
And if the White House now wants unions to back Blanche Lincoln, they’ve got a strange way of showing it.
That’s my parting shot for today.
