For at least a month, President Obama and the Congress have done nothing – nothing! – but talk about reducing the national debt. Without agreeing on anything.
The problem is: It’s all based on a pack of lies.
Lie #1: Debt reduction’s the number problem facing the country. No it’s not. In the latest Gallup poll, 58 percent of Americans said creating jobs was the most important issue. Only 16 percent rated cutting the debt number one.
Creating jobs is the best way to grow the economy AND reduce the debt. That’s what the president and Congress SHOULD be working on.
Lie #2: It doesn’t matter whether we raise the debt ceiling or not. Dead wrong. It’s as simple as this: a great nation pays its bills. And once it stops, once it reneges on its obligations, it becomes another banana republic. Which Tea Partiers don’t care about. They’re anti-government. They’re anti-America.
Lie #3: Conservatives are fiscal conservatives. Baloney. Where were they when George Bush led us into two wars, vastly expanded Medicare, and gave huge tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires? Conservatives only preach balancing the budget when Democrats are in office. When Republicans are in power, they spend like drunken sailors.
We’ve heard too many lies about debt reduction. We need more politicians like Bernie Sanders – to tell the truth.
That’s my parting shot for today.
