So what’s the biggest story these days? What’s everybody talking about?
I found out Saturday night, at the Christmas party of a couple of great friends.
It was what Washington calls an “A-List” party. Among many others, I saw and talked to: three U.S. Senators, two members of Congress, two Cabinet Secretaries, five top White House officials, and three network TV correspondents.
It was the same day the Senate had debated this year’s big spending bill, debate continued on the health care reform bill, and the day after the House passed sweeping new regulations on Wall Street.
And the number one topic of conversation? I kid you not: Tiger Woods. News that Tiger had just announced he was taking an indefinite leave from golf while getting his personal life back in order.
Can you believe it? Everywhere I turned, people didn’t ask about health care, Afghanistan, or Wall Street. They all wanted to know what I thought about Tiger.
It reminded me so much of the Clinton days, and all the months of buzz about Monica Lewinsky.
You think we would have learned by now that nobody’s perfect. Especially men.
And that every man we put up on a pedestal will eventually self-destruct. Merry Christmas!
That’s my parting shot for today.
