There were a lot of stories that caught my attention this weekend.
Jerry Sandusky found guilty on 45 counts. Mary Cheney married her partner. A Catholic monsignor found guilty of helping cover-up sexual abuse of young boys by priests. And Catholic nuns roaring through the heartland on their bus, slamming the Ryan budget.
But the story that stopped me in my tracks was this one: As his new communications director, Pope Benedict has hired Greg Burke, the Vatican correspondent for Fox News.
Which, in a way, comes as no surprise. The Vatican and American bishops opposed President Obama’s health-care reform legislation. They also opposed the Obama administration’s new policy on birth control. And they’ve accused nuns of disobedience for supporting Obama’s plans.
But, still, you’d think leaders of the church of John F. Kennedy and Mario Cuomo and Geraldine Ferraro would think twice before turning it into the church of Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich and Roger Ailes.
So, now it’s come full-circle. Fox News is the communications arm of the Republican National Committee. And the Vatican is a division of Fox News.
There’s no room for a moderate in today’s Republican Party. There’s no room for a moderate in today’s Catholic Church.
That’s my parting shot for today.
