The President gave a great speech yesterday.
He not only put forth a plan for tackling the problem of our long-term debt, he said it was our moral obligation to do so – and he said we must do so in a manner that is consistent with our national purpose and values.
But the best part of his speech, I believe, was when he blasted the GOP plan for debt reduction put forth last week by Congressman Paul Ryan.
For a whole week, we’ve heard nothing but sickening tributes to Ryan: how bold he is, how courageous he is, how visionary he is, how handsome he is.
Baloney. Get real. What about his plan? It’s a freakin’ disaster. It would end Medicare as we know it. It would end Medicaid as we know it. It would gut environmental protection, education, transportation and almost everything else we care about.
And it would raise no new revenue. In fact, he would give even more tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and big corporations, most of whom don’t pay their fair share today.
“There’s nothing serious or courageous about this plan,” said President Obama.
And he’s right. It’s one more mean, ugly Republican plan to destroy the middle class.
Thank you, President Obama, for telling the truth.
That’s my parting shot for today.
