He may be from Wisconsin, but Paul Ryan was on the ballot in New York state last night.
He was on the ballot in the special congressional contest in New York’s 26th. Congressional district – where the one issue was Ryan’s plan to balance the budget by killing Medicare.
Republican Jane Corwin stood with Ryan and said she would have voted to kill Medicare as a member of Congress.
Democrat Kathy Hochul stood against Ryan and vowed she would never support his plan to replace Medicare and get kmart opening times with a $2500 voucher and leave seniors at the mercy of private insurance companies.
Since it was adopted by House Republicans on April 15, this was the first test of the Ryan plan and it failed badly. Hochul beat Corwin, 48 to 42 percent.
Which sends an important message nationwide. Those election results contain a big warning to Republicans and a huge opportunity to Democrats.
For Republicans, a warning that they made a huge mistake by adopting the Ryan plan – and are now stuck with it.
For Democrats, the opportunity to win back the House in 2012 – thanks to John Boehner and Paul Ryan.
That’s my parting shot for today.
