As much as I tried to escape the news over the holidays, it was impossible to avoid all the media attention to the Christmas Eve terrorist attack on an airliner over Detroit.
And what struck me most about it was: Starting with Dick Cheney, how quick Republicans were to blame it all on President Obama.
In fact, while I heard them all blame Barack Obama, I didn’t hear one of them blame al-Qaeda!
To me, nothing better illustrates the total irrelevance of the Republican Party today.
Clearly, this country faces a lot of challenges: on jobs, global warming, health care, immigration, and – as we learned again at Christmas – on national security.
But Republicans aren’t interested in solving problems. They have refused to cooperate with President Obama on any one issue. Instead, they have chosen to oppose him on everything – and blame him for everything. Even for a failed act of terrorism.
Well, if they want to play politics with national security, it’s only fair to remind them.
Three thousand people died on September 11, 2001, on George Bush’s watch.
Nobody died on December 25, 2009, on Barack Obama’s watch.
We’re safer today than we ever were under George Bush.
That’s my parting shot for today.
