Around the world…There’s nothing more American than Coca-Cola.
So it was disconcerting to hear Muhtar Kent, the Chairman of Coca-Cola, slam the United States – saying it’s easier to do business in China today than here, in Coke’s homeland.
Disconcerting, first, because he’s a Turk. What the hell is he doing criticizing us?
Disconcerting, also, because – of course, it’s easier making deals and getting government permits in China. Because it’s a Communist country. Where the government owns everything and controls everything. Seriously, is that what he wants for America?
And disconcerting, finally, because the problem, he says, is partisan gridlock in Washington.
He’s right about that. But what he, and other business leaders have to understand, is this: The partisan gridlock in Washington cannot be blamed, as too many people pretend, on both political parties equally. The partisan gridlock is the result of Republican intransigence – ONLY!
Over and over again, President Obama has shown that he’s willing to compromise. So have House and Senate Democrats. It’s only House Tea Party Republicans, under John Boehner, who have rejected every compromise and insisted it’s “my way or the highway.”
Sure, the United States Congress is locked in stalemate today. But don’t blame both parties. Blame Republicans.
That’s my parting shot for today.
