Just when it looked like nothing was going to happen out of the debt talks between President Obama and Republicans…Suddenly Mitch McConnell has surprised everybody with a radical proposal.
In effect, admitting he could never get enough Republican votes in Congress for a budget deal, McConnell says: Let’s throw in the towel.
Instead, McConnell proposed, Congress would simply pass a resolution giving President Obama authority to raise the debt ceiling on his own. At the same time, Obama would have to submit a list of proposed budget cuts, but Congress wouldn’t have to do anything about them.
So now, Obama has to choose: to take the McConnell deal or not.
NO means not letting Congress off the hook. Forcing them to do their job. Forcing them to vote up or down.
YES means accepting the fact that they’re probably not going to make a deal, anyway. So, seize the moment, use the power, and raise the debt ceiling to make sure we can pay our bills.
For Obama, it’s a tough call. But my advice would be: take the deal, Mr. President. This is the best you’re going to get. Take the deal – and then get back to working on jobs!
That’s my parting shot for today. I’m Bill Press.
