Tuesday night, January 25, President Obama will give his second State of the Union address.
No advance copy of his remarks have been provided – he’s no doubt still working on them – but already most commentators agree: President Obama is going to move to the center.
What? Move to the center? Where the hell do they think he’s been over the last two years?
Seriously, by no stretch of the imagination can Barack Obama be called a liberal. Just look at his record: He rejected single-payer health care. He dumped the public plan option. He handed $350 billion to Wall Street banks. And, instead of ending them, as he promised, he extended George Bush’s tax cuts to the very wealthiest of Americans.
That’s not the record of a liberal. That’s not even the record of a centrist. That’s the record of someone right of center.
There’s no need for President Obama to move to the center – or the right. He should stay left of center, where most of his supporters – and most of the American people – are.
If he moves any further to the right, he’ll be a conservative. And that’s definitely not – what we voted for.
That’s my parting shot for today.
