If you had any hope Republicans would come back from their August break more willing to cooperate in fixing America’s problems…
Fugeddaboudit! John Boehner’s already crushed any hopes of bipartisanship – by publicly and rudely dissing President Obama.
Everybody knows the number one problem facing this country is jobs. And President Obama decided to use the first day Congress comes back in session – after a long, six-week, August vacation – to focus on jobs and present a jobs plan to a joint session of Congress.
But John Boehner said no. We’re too busy that day. And we’ll be too tired from our long vacation. How ‘bout the next day, he suggested.
What an outrage. Never before has a Speaker of the House, not even Newt Gingrich, showed such disrespect for the President of the United States.
What’s more important for members of Congress to be doing that evening? Hanging out with lobbyists? Getting drunk? Or watching the Republican presidential debate – which has already been postponed twice. And could be postponed again or rescheduled for later that same evening.
In the end, I’m sorry the President caved in. But suddenly the political stakes have gotten a lot uglier. It’s not just that Republicans don’t give a damn about jobs. They don’t give a damn about the office of president, either.
That’s my parting shot for today.
