Every time you turn around, it seems, another wannabe Republican presidential candidate drops out of the race.
First, it was Haley Barbour. Then, Donald Trump. Then, Mike Huckabee. And now, Mitch Daniels.
For Republicans, Mitch was the greatest disappointment of all. The rest of the field was so unimpressive, party pooh-bahs were counting on Mitch to save the day. Alas, like the Rapture, he didn’t show up on schedule, either.
Now, there’s a lot of speculation about why all of them decided not to run. Daniels says it’s because his wife and four daughters didn’t want him to run. And, no doubt, if he did run, he and his wife would have some ‘splainin’ to do about their unusual on, off, and on-again marriage.
But there’s a bigger reality here nobody wants to talk about.
Yes, other factors weighed in their decision. But a primary consideration for all of them was: We looked at this race. We saw how popular President Obama is. We realized what a good record he’s racked up. We concluded there was no way we could beat him – and we didn’t want to spend the next 18 months pretending.
Sure, somebody will eventually run against Obama. But these four were smart not even to try.
That’s my parting shot for today.
