In what seems like a dozen interviews about Anthony Weiner, I keep getting asked the same question: Why aren’t any Democrats standing up to defend him?
Duh! Isn’t it obvious. Democrats aren’t any rush to stand up and defend Weiner for very good reasons.
One, he embarrassed them. Big Time. Democrats can’t just talk about Larry Craig, John Ensign, and David Vitter anymore. Now one of their own has his pickle in a pickle.
Two, he lied to them. Over and over again. So those Democratic colleagues who did, originally, rush to support him as a victim of online hacking were burned badly.
Three. He ruined their game plan. Which was to talk about nothing but Paul Ryan’s plans to kill Medicare until election day 2012. And now all the media attention’s on Weinergate.
Four, we still don’t know the end of the story. We won’t know until the ethics investigation whether or not he used government resources. If so, he could be fined or reprimanded.
And we don’t know whether there are more photos – more explicit photos – still to be released. In which case, Weiner’s goose is cooked.
No wonder Democrats are holding back. They’re smart.
That’s my parting shot for today.
