What to say about Teddy Kennedy?
You start out by saying he was, hands down, the best, the strongest, and the most effective member of the United States Senate. Not for nothing did they call him the Last Lion.
You add the fact that he was the last of the great Kennedy dynasty. Picking up the torch from brothers John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy and keeping the dream alive for over 40 years.
During that time, he led the fight on every single progressive issue: education, raising the minimum wage, saving the environment, opposition to the war in Iraq. Even though he had all the money in the world, he used his power to fight for the poor and working class Americans.
But it was the issue of universal health care, more than any other, that was the cause of Senator Kennedy’s life. He started fighting for it in 1978, and he’s been leading the battle ever since.
Thanks to President Obama, we are now closer than we’ve ever been to passing health care reform. That wouldn’t have happened without the decades of work done on that issue by Teddy Kennedy. Now there’s only one thing to do in his honor: Name that bill after Senator Kennedy – and pass it, with a strong public plan option, NOW!
That’s my parting shot for today.
