You won’t often hear me lament the political demise of a Republican. But – it’s sad to see Richard Lugar lose his primary battle yesterday to Tea Party Republican Richard Mourdock.
Sad because Lugar is a world leader in nuclear disarmament, a sane voice in foreign affairs, and the rare kind of Republican, now a vanishing breed, who’s willing to work with Democrats to get things done.
Sadder yet because Mourdock is just the opposite: a zealous tea partier who wants to tear down government, not make it work more effectively.
Fortunately, for Indiana, there’s a much better choice: Democratic Congressman Joe Donnelly. He’s a real fighter for the middle class and already has a great track record of delivering for the people of Indiana.
Supporting and electing Joe Donnelly must now be one of the top priorities of Democrats everywhere.
After all, it’s already bad enough in the Senate with tea partiers Jim DeMint and Rand Paul in power. The last thing we need is yet another Tea Party Republican.
The Tea Party already controls the House of Representatives. We can’t let them take over control of the Senate.
That’s my parting shot for today.
