I don’t know about you, but neither of my parents graduated from college. Neither did any of my grandparents.
Which doesn’t mean they didn’t work hard. They did. One of my grandfathers was a commercial fisherman, the other was postmaster. One of my grandmothers was a nursing aide, the other owned a small grocery store. My father ran his own gas station, where my mother kept the books.
But their lifelong dream was that their kids and grandkids have the chance to go to college. And, in my family, I was the first. When I graduated from Niagara University, my grandmother and my parents were there. I made their dream – their share of the American dream – come true.
Now President Obama would like to share that dream with every American family. To give every American kid the opportunity, if he or she chooses, to get a college education. That’s a goal every American parent can embrace – EXCEPT Rick Santorum.
For wanting every American to have the opportunity to go to college, Santorum calls President Obama “a snob.”
Unbelievable! Sounds like Santorum would prefer that kids drop out of school after sixth grade to work in shoe factories – while their mothers are chained, barefoot and pregnant, to the kitchen stove.
That’s my parting shot for today.
