So now even Ron Paul, the last of the Mohicans, has dropped out of the Republican primary.
You know, I didn’t shed a tear when Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, or Rick Santorum dropped out of the race. But I hate to see Ron Paul go. For a couple of reasons.
First, because he’s so colorful – and so independent. Unlike all the rest, Ron Paul always says what’s on his mind, whether it’s politically popular or not. He’s a straight shooter in a crowd of double-talkers.
Second, because Ron Paul actually makes sense on a lot of issues. Sure, he’s kooky on the gold standard and wanting to get rid of the Fed. But on the war in Iraq, and the war in Afghanistan, and in criticizing Republicans for complaining about the budget deficit, yet refusing to raise taxes – Ron Paul is spot on.
Unfortunately, unlike Michelle Bachmann, Ron Paul is also leaving the Congress, not running for re-election. And that’s a real loss for the country.
Mark my words. Some day Republicans will regret they didn’t take Ron Paul seriously.
That’s my parting shot for today.
