Have you ever seen an army march backwards so fast?
That’s the fun of watching Republicans trying to distance themselves from Paul Ryan’s budget plan – embraced by House Republicans just a month ago.
Now, they’re trying to drop it like a hot potato. John Boehner says it’s just “one idea” out there. Eric Cantor says they have to look for other ideas of how to balance the budget. Ways and Means Chair Dave Camp says he won’t even schedule it for debate. And Ryan himself now says it’s just a “starting point.”
Oh, no they don’t. Republicans can’t run from the Ryan plan. They wrote it, they introduced it, they supported it, and – they voted on it! It is now the official Republican budget plan: to kill Medicare in order to give huge new tax breaks to the rich!
Take it from me: this is the Republicans’ Waterloo.
Or, to put it another way, this is the Republican Jonestown. Paul Ryan made the Kool-Aid. And all Republicans drank it. And now they realize it’s a poison brew.
On this issue alone, Republicans could lose the House and Senate in 2012. And should!
That’s my parting shot for today.
