Here’s a headline we haven’t heard in a long time: Barack Obama refuses to compromise. And Republicans cave in!
For too long, we’ve heard just the opposite. But, this time, it was President Obama who refused to cave in to Republican demands. And, for the first time, Republicans were forced to throw in the towel.
The stage was set, earlier in the week, when the Senate voted overwhelmingly, 89-10, to approve a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits.
But then John Boehner, who had already signed on, reneged on the deal when his Tea Party freshmen refused to go along. So Boehner rejected the deal and demanded that Obama cave in.
In the past, Obama might have caved in. But this time, with the overwhelming support of the American people and Republicans in Congress, he decided to hang tough. And it worked! At the eleventh hour, it was John Boehner who caved in. America’s working families will NOT see their taxes go up on January 1. And President Obama gets credit for delivering a major, middle-class tax cut.
Let’s hope President Obama learned a big lesson here: Don’t cave in. Hang touch. And you will win!
That’s my parting shot for today. I’m Bill Press. Merry Christmas!
