We’ve heard a lot of bad news lately, but this was some of the worst ever: News that the number of people living in poverty in the United States has actually increased over the last year.
Indeed, hard to believe that, today, one in seven people in this country are living below the poverty level: that is, making $10,830 a year or less. And, many of them, trying to raise a family on that.
It’s a shocking and embarrassing statistic, especially given that we are the wealthiest country on the planet – and the richest country ever in history.
That news alone makes a mockery of Republican demands to give the wealthiest two percent of Americans another tax cut. As if THEY’RE the ones who need government help these days.
It also underscores the vast disparity of wealth in this country, where the bottom 50 percent of Americans control only 2.5 percent of our wealth.
And it reinforces the importance of what President Obama has made his top priority: jobs.
Because there’s nothing more critical. In the end, the only answer to lifting people out of poverty – is a good job and a paycheck.
That’s my parting shot for today.
