Shades of Newt Gingrich!
Remember the “Contract with America?” It’s back, only this time with a new name: the “Pledge to America.”
It was released yesterday by Orange Man John Boehner and it took off like a lead balloon. Because there’s nothing new in it. It’s the same old litany of cut this, block that, anti-government rhetoric we’ve been hearing from Republicans for two years.
For starters, they promise to repeal President Obama’s new health care reform program. Ironically, that new package of consumer protections also began yesterday. Among other things, ending the ability of insurance companies to deny coverage because of a pre-existing condition, providing coverage for preventive care, allowing parents to keep kids on their own policy until they’re 26.
Exactly which provisions will Boehner and company repeal? All of them?
Curiously, in their whole package, there’s nothing about creating new jobs, except offering tax cuts to millionaires. And nothing about cracking down on corporations that ship jobs overseas – even though that’s the number one issue among conservative voters, according on the Republicans own “America Speaking Out” website.
Bottom line: The Pledge to America is an empty set of promises. And totally meaningless. Because Republicans are never going to win control of the House. And John Boehner will never be Speaker.
That’s my parting shot for today.
