We learned a lot about Paul Ryan over the weekend: We learned he’s such a tea party zealot, he’d throw his own mother under the bus.
Ryan actually went to a retirement community called The Villages, in Florida, and brought his 78-year old mother up on stage.
Ryan claims his plan would not affect seniors like his Mom, who are already on Medicare. But he’s simply not telling the truth.
Ryan’s plan would hurt today’s seniors in three ways. First, he leaves the so-called “doughnut hole” for prescription drugs – which will cost seniors an extra $1700 bucks.
Second, by repealing Obamacare, he makes seniors pay for preventative care.
Third, by adding $1 trillion to defense spending and giving trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, he makes cuts to existing Medicare benefits more likely.
And for those soon to be eligible for Medicare: They will get a voucher, instead, which will pay only part of their health care. According to the Congressional Budget Office, seniors will have to come up with an extra $6,500 a year out of their own pocket – which most seniors don’t have.
But Paul Ryan doesn’t care. He’d throw his own mother under the bus. And just did.
That’s my parting shot for today.
