There’s no other word for it.
IF – and I say if – IF what HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius said on Sunday morning is true – there’s no other word for it: We have been BETRAYED!
Betrayed by President Obama on the public plan option.
For the last eight months, he’s argued that a public plan option is an essential element of any health care reform.
Why? Because it’s the only way to give Americans who don’t already have health insurance a way to buy it – and give insurance companies some much needed competition.
But Obama has never said he would veto any bill without a public plan option. And now Secretary Sibelius says we might give up a public plan in exchange for regional, insurance “coops.”
And that’s dead wrong. A coop is a cop-out. Because it leaves insurance companies in charge.
If this is, indeed, the new White House policy, it’s a big mistake. It will get them no Republican votes. And it will cost them Democratic votes.
But it’s more than a mistake. It’s a betrayal of all of us who believed him when he said he would fight for a public plan option.
Now, he looks like he caved in. Again!
That’s my parting shot for today. I’m Bill Press.
