It took a lot of guts for President Obama to send the Navy Seals in to get Osama bin Laden. It took even more guts for him to come out in support of same-sex marriage.
Because there’s no way the first way could hurt him politically, as long as it went reasonably well. But the second could cost him politically. Same-sex marriage is still not well-received in most states, as we saw again Tuesday in North Carolina.
But Obama decided to defy the political odds and take a stand. It’s the boldest display of presidential leadership we’ve seen in our lifetime.
How refreshing! Usually, presidents follow public opinion. It’s good to a president lead public opinion for once.
Especially because, in this case, it’s the right thing to do. Opposition to same-sex marriage is out-and-out discrimination. There is no way to defend it under the Constitution. And no way to defend it under the Bible, if you really understand the message of Jesus and don’t let your own bigotry get in the way.
Of course, it helped that Vice-President first came out in support of same-sex marriage three days earlier. Now if Joe Biden would only come out in favor of the legalization of marijuana!
That’s my parting shot for today.
