Let’s not kid ourselves. For liberals, for progressives, for Independents, for Democrats, this was not a good week.
With Republicans in control of the House, there’s going to be more gridlock than ever, more ugly partisan politics than ever, and less accomplished than ever. And we may even lose some of the gains we made over the last two years.
So, we lost big time this week, no doubt about it.
But we also can’t forget: There’s a silver lining to this cloud.
One. Democrats still control the U.S. Senate. They’ll be able to block any bad legislation that passes the Republican-controlled House.
Two. President Obama’s still in the White House. Nothing will get passed his veto pen. And he’s still got the most powerful bullhorn in the land for getting his message out.
Three. Now that Republicans are in control, they can’t just be the Party of No anymore. They have to govern. They have to lead. And if they don’t lead to create jobs, fix Social Security, and improve this economy – we can blame it all on them.
So, take heart, my fellow liberals. As Nancy Pelosi says, “Don’t Agonize. Organize!”
And let’s start now to fight to get power back – in 2012.
That’s my parting shot for today.
