It’s funny to see Mitt Romney and other Republicans trying to make such a big deal about President Obama’s off-mike comment to Russian President Medvedev.
Hey, don’t worry about missile defense, Obama told his Russian counterpart. After the election, we’ll be able to make a deal.
So, what’s the big deal. It shows a lot of confidence on Obama’s part, for one thing. But also, it’s nothing, compared to other open-mike gaffes.
Remember Ronald Reagan in 1984, saying he’d signed legislation to outlaw Russian forever. “We begin bombing in five minutes.”
Or George Bush, calling Adam Clymer of the New York Times a “major league a-hole.” Or President Sarkozy, last year, talking about Benjamin Netanyahu: “He’s a liar.” Or John Major, calling members of his Cabinet “bastards.”
And who could forget Jesse Jackson in 2008, telling a fellow guest what he thought of candidate Barack Obama: “I want to cut his nuts off.”
So, what President Obama said off-mike is absolutely harmless.
Still, he should have learned long ago what every radio and television talk show host knows: Your microphone is always hot! So, be careful what you say.
That’s my parting shot for today.
