When I heard that McDonald’s was switching to a healthier menu for kids, it sounded fishy to me. And, sure enough, it is.
McDonald’s made the big announcement yesterday: Starting in September, they trumpeted that most Mickey D’s would offer new, healthy Happy Meals. But it’s not as good as it sounds.
Yes, with every Happy Meal, they will now offer a couple of slices of apple, or some other fruit – and cut the serving of French Fries in half.
But the Happy Meal will still come with a calorie-loaded burger, cheeseburger, or chicken mcnuggets. It will still come with half an order of fries. Plus a soda, unless parents are willing to risk a total child meltdown by ordering milk, instead.
And, of course, every Happy Meal will include a toy – which is the only reason kids want to keep going back to McDonalds, anyway.
A morsel of fruit at McDonalds. For the fast food giant, it’s a clever public relations campaign. But, in the end, it doesn’t change a thing. McDonald’s is not where you go for food that’s good for you.
If you want your kids to eat healthy and avoid obesity, stay out of McDonalds.
That’s my parting shot for today.
