Welcome home, Mr. President.
You’ve been gone a long time, ten days. And you’ve been doing good work: building America’s relationships with leading countries of Asia and making sure the United States can hold its own in this global economy.
And you come home just in the nick of time. As new members of Congress rush into town for their orientation classes. And as existing members of Congress, both those who won and those who lost, limp back into town for their lame-duck session.
On the Sunday talk shows, everybody was offering you advice, most of it worthless and most of it saying you had to be ready to compromise.
My advice: Ignore the compromise talk, Mr. President. Republicans may have won the House, but not until January. Even then, they won’t control the Senate. And you’re still President of the United States.
The American people don’t want a weak president. They want a fighter. So now’s the time to fight hard:
- For middle-class tax cuts – and no tax cuts for the very wealthy
- For getting rid of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – now; no more delays
- For the new START Treaty, reducing the number of nuclear warheads
Yes, welcome home, Mr. President. Now, get to work. And be tough!
That’s my parting shot for today.
