OK. Insert Weiner joke here: Weiner’s roasted. Weiner’s cooked. Weiner’s gobbled up.
Whatever! The truth is: Congressman Anthony Weiner’s gone. He resigned yesterday. The media’s finally going to have to find something else to talk about.
Should he have resigned? I still say: Hell, no! Other politicians have done a lot worse, without resigning. But, for him, it became impossible to resist the pressure put on him by his so-called colleagues: Nancy Pelosi, Chris van Hollen, Steve Israel, Debbie Wasserman Schultz – and even the President of the United States.
So, what did we learn from this? Two things.
First. As long as there are no pictures, you’re safe. Larry Craig, David Vitter, John Ensign, Mark Sanford. No pix. Nobody called for their resignation. But, as Weiner learned, if there are pix, your goose is cooked.
Second. If you’re a Republican, you’re safe. Because your Republican colleagues will support you, no matter what you do, or remain silent. But, if you’re a Democrat, you’re screwed. Because your fellow Democrats will quickly throw you under the bus.
I’m sorry to see Anthony Weiner go. The only good news is: Now, at last, we can get back to talking about things that really matter.
That’s my parting shot for today.
