We Americans pride ourselves on being #1. And, in many ways, we are.
But it’s also true that, in more and more ways, we are falling behind. As illustrated by two stories in the last couple days.
First, news out of China of a new bullet train, the world’s fastest, reaching speeds of more than 245 mph. It makes the 200 km run between Shanghai and Hangzhou in just 45 min.
And the best we have is the Amtrak Express, which makes the 337 km run between Washington, D.C. and New York City in two hours and 45 minutes.
Isn’t that embarrassing? That the Chinese can do it, have done it, and we can’t. And it looks like it’s not getting any better. That’s the second story.
Governor Chris Christie announced he’s going ahead with plans to kill a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River, connecting New York and New Jersey, and replacing a two-track tunnel that’s over 100 years old. Construction for the new tunnel, in the planning stages for 20 years, had already begun. Now it’s dead.
The contrast could not be more clear. The rest of the world’s moving forward. With anti-government extremists in charge, we’re moving backward.?
