Most of the time, I don’t pay any attention. But yesterday a demonstration in front of the White House caught my attention.
You can see the photos here. A small group of protestors carrying a big sign: “Free Bradley Manning.” Amen!
Private Bradley Manning has not been charged with any crime. He’s suspected of leaking classified materials to Wikileaks. But he’s not yet been charged.
Nevertheless, since arrested in Iraq last May, he’s been held in prison: first in Kuwait and, since last July, in Quantico, Virginia.
In fact, he’s being treated as a terrorist. Not just held in prison, but in maximum custody solitary confinement – conditions which Amnesty International have condemned as “harsh and punitive.” And which State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley described as “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” Crowley, of course, lost his job for telling the truth.
What I want to know is: How come Bradley Manning is stuck in solitary confinement on suspicion of leaking secret documents – But Karl Rove and Scooter Libby spent no time in prison for leaking the identify of an undercover CIA agent?
That’s my parting shot for today.
