You expect President Obama to get slammed by the right. But, lately, he’s also been getting slammed by the left.
For example: “Is Obama punking us?” That’s the headline of a recent column by Frank Rich. One of a number of pieces written by liberals who say they’re disappointed in Obama’s performance so far – and don’t think he’s being strong enough.
Funny. I remember people saying the same thing about him in Iowa – and look who won the Iowa caucuses.
So what’s the truth?
The truth is, Obama has disappointed on several issues: no change in Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell or the Defense of Marriage Act; too close to Bush on national security issues; sending more troops to Afghanistan; and, especially, waffling on the public plan option in health care.
But he’s also delivered on many key issues: banning torture; shutting down GITMO; starting to bring troops home from Iraq; equal pay for women; and making clean energy and universal health care his top priorities.
So, it’s OK to be disappointed. It’s important to keep the pressure on. It’s our job to always demand more.
But we also have to remember: No president will ever deliver everything we want.
And Barack Obama and Joe Biden are a hell of a lot better – than John McCain and Sarah Palin.
That’s my parting shot for today.
