In my life as a political commentator, I hear people say a lot of dumb things.
But one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard was a statement yesterday by James Carville, who ran Clinton’s first presidential campaign in 1992. Almost 20 years ago, I might add.
Looking ahead to 2012, Carville wrote on CNN’s blog that it’s time for President Obama to panic! Not just get tough. Not just work harder. But – Panic!!
How silly. First of all, the 2012 election is still 14 months away. Much too early for anybody to panic. Plus, there’s so much we don’t know.
We don’t know what shape the economy will be in.
We don’t know what the unemployment figure will be.
We don’t know whether we’ll be out of two wars, or into another one.
We really don’t know what the big issues will be.
We don’t know who the Republican nominee will be.
Of course, President Obama knows he’s vulnerable. So he has to work hard, raise a ton of money, and put together a strong campaign organization. Which is exactly what he’s doing.
But – panic? Forget it.
The only ones who should panic are Republicans – who might end up with Rick Perry as their nominee.
That’s my parting shot for today.
