We can breathe easy this week. There’s no Republican presidential debate.
But we learned a lot in the last three Republican debates. We learned a lot about the candidates.
That Michele Bachmann’s even crazier than we thought. That Mitt Romney’s a stronger candidate than we thought. And that Rick Perry’s a lot weaker than we thought.
But we learned even more about the audience. If these are typical Republicans, they are even meaner, more ignorant, and more intolerant than we thought.
In California, they cheered when told Texas had executed 234 people. In Tampa, they called for letting poor people die rather than give them emergency room care. And in Orlando, they booed a soldier – booed a soldier wearing the uniform and defending our country in time of war – only because he is gay.
But the worst part is – that in not one of those three cases – did any of the candidates condemn the boorish behavior of the audience or disassociate themselves from it.
Again, it’s just further proof that today’s Republican party has just sunk to the bottom of the barrel. The Tea Party rules.
That’s my parting shot for today.
