I enjoy appearing on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.” It’s a good show, and Howie Kurtz is a good, well-prepared host.
But that doesn’t mean he’s right about everything. And he was definitely wrong yesterday when he asked my reaction to Mitt Romney’s demanding that Harry Reid “put up or shut up” on Harry’s claim that somebody told him Romney paid zero taxes for a couple of years.
“There’s only one person who can answer that,” I said. “And it’s not Harry Reid, it’s Mitt Romney.”
“That’s just a Democratic talking point,” Howie bellowed. No, no, no. He’s dead wrong.
Reid’s not a journalist. He doesn’t have to reveal his sources. And Harry Reid’s not running for president. But Mitt Romney is. And there’s only one way for Romney to prove he did, indeed, pay taxes every year: to release his tax returns. Just like his Daddy did. Just like Barack Obama and Joe Biden have. Just like he did, when he was being considered for vice-president, four years ago.
Journalists should not fall for the Romney campaign’s attempt to shift attention to Harry Reid. Harry Reid’s not the issue. Mitt Romney is.
That’s my parting shot for today.
