Words do, indeed, have consequences – as you’ve just heard Eric Burns of Media Matters prove, once again.
Thanks to Media Matters and investigative reporter John Hamilton, we now know the full story behind would-be mass murderer Byron Williams. Who failed in his plan to murder the leadership of the Tides Foundation in San Francisco and the Bay Area ACLU – not because he chickened out, but because he was stopped for a routine traffic violation before, heavily-armed and fully intent to kill, he reached his destination.
From his prison cell, Williams told Harrington he was driven to murder by the repeated hostile rhetoric of Glenn Beck – who, on his backboard, identified the Tides Foundation and the ACLU as dangerous enemies of America. To a nut like Williams, then, he was only doing his patriotic duty by packing up his guns, driving to San Francisco, and taking them out.
And that’s the problem with the kind of incendiary language – I call it TOXIC TALK – we hear every day from Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, Savage, and all the rest. There are too many unhinged people out there who will take their hints of violence literally.
Will Glenn Beck finally admit that, in this case, his violent words led to violent actions?
That’s my parting shot for today.
