There were a lot of misstatements, if not outright lies, told at Monday night’s GOP debate – like Rick Perry saying he’d only received $5,000 in campaign contributions from Merck.
But the biggest lie was told, not Monday night, but Tuesday morning. By Michele Bachmann. Telling Matt Lauer on the “Today” show that, according to what one unnamed woman allegedly told her, the vaccine Gardasil was the cause of her daughter’s mental retardation.
Doctors and medical experts say there is zero basis for that claim.
Yes, it was wrong for Governor Perry to force all 12-year old girls to be inoculated – by executive order.
Yes, he has close political and financial ties to the drug manufacturer Merck.
Those are legitimate lines of attack. But it was irresponsible for Michele Bachmann to go on national TV and spread rumors about dangers of the vaccine without taking time to check her source.
It’s not the first time Bachmann’s shot from the lip, of course. In the debate, she again accused President Obama of stealing $500 billion from Medicare.
Maybe she still believes Lexington and Concord are in New Hampshire, not Massachusetts.
But she’s definitely proved she’s a loose cannon – that can’t be trusted on anything.
That’s my parting shot for today.
