How would Newt Gingrich do as president? Ask his fellow Republicans. They’re even harder on him than Democrats.
Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma says he couldn’t support Newt because, having served in the House when Gingrich was Speaker, he found his “leadership lacking.”
Congressman Peter King of New York refuses to endorse Newt because, he says, he was so “erratic” as Speaker.
In a conference call with reporters, former Missouri Republican Senator Jim Talent said that Newt was so unpredictable as Speaker that “you would have to check the newspapers (every morning)…to see what the Speaker had said that you have to clean up in your own district.”
Former White House Chief of Staff John Sununu accused Gingrich of being interested in nothing but pure “self-aggrandizement.” And that was just for starters. Many other Republicans have been equally candid and even more critical.
Clearly, as we hear from those closest to him, to know Newt is to abhor Newt. So we can only hope the American people get to know as much about Newt as possible.
That’s my parting shot for today.
