Like you, I’ve bought a lot of raffle tickets in my life. For lots of different stuff: new cars, meals at restaurants, weekend get-aways, a Virginia ham.
But there’s never before been a raffle like this one: for dinner with the President and Vice-President of the United States! Plus airfare to Washington and one night in a D.C. hotel.
That’s what the Obama campaign is offering up. To qualify, they’re asking a donation from $5 to $2500 – although you can throw your name in for free, just for the hell of it. And President Obama has even taped a video pitch, urging people to buy tickets.
Now, I admit, it’d be fun to hang out with President Obama. He’s one of the smartest and most interesting people I’ve ever met. And I also admit that what the campaign’s doing is perfectly legal.
But I still find it unseemly – and, frankly, tacky – to raffle off access to him, at any price. Surely, the office of President of United States deserves a little more respect.
Sure, I’d love to have dinner with President Obama. But I don’t think he should be auctioned off like a Virginia ham.
That’s my parting shot for today.
