I hate to say this, but…….
It’s been two years, and I’m still wondering: Does President Obama really have any backbone?
Like so many progressives, I was really disappointed how quickly he abandoned the public plan option – after convincing us how important it was, in order to introduce cost controls and competition into health care reform. He walked away from it, before it was even brought to a vote in the Senate.
Now, it looks like the same thing with tax cuts for the wealthy.
President Obama’s right: With our deficit and national debt so high, it would be insane to borrow another $800 billion from the Chinese in order to give the wealthiest two percent of Americans a continued tax break. They don’t need it, they don’t deserve it – and they won’t use it to create jobs.
Yet suddenly, after the mid-term elections, the President indicates he’s willing to compromise and give the richest of the rich a continued tax break, even if only for another couple of years.
In so doing, he hands John Boehner his first major legislative victory – without even making Boehner fight for it.
Two years later, I’m still looking for Barack Obama’s backbone. Does he have one?
That’s my parting shot for today.
