Good for Bill Clinton.
He went to North Korea to negotiate the release of two American journalists. And he brought those two journalists home from North Korea to their families – and to freedom.
Mission accomplished! A moment for all Americans to celebrate!
If only we could leave it at that. But, oh no, no sooner had Bill Clinton’s plane landed than critics rushed in.
He did nothing but reward North Korea’s bad behavior, huffed former Bush UN Representative John Bolton. He set a bad precedent for dealing with terrorists, said other Bushies. And I was actually asked on MSNBC: Did Bill Clinton upstage President Obama? Did he even upstage his wife?
Oh, please! Why not just celebrate what happened?
There was no way Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton could go to North Korea. But Bill Clinton could, and did, and performed a great humanitarian mission.
Clinton did not reward anyone’s bad behavior. North Korea got one photo op and one dinner with Clinton. We got two Americans free. That’s a good deal. And if we have to make the same deal with Iran to get free three American backpackers, why not?
It’s time to stop analyzing this thing to death. It’s time to just step back and say, with Laura Ling and Euna Lee: President Clinton – THANK YOU!
That’s my parting shot for today. I’m Bill Press.
