Leadership. It may be hard to define, but you know it when you see it – and you know it when you don’t.
And that was clearly the case – lack of leadership – on display on Meet the Press Sunday morning.
In the hot seat: Speaker John Boehner. Who said he accepts the fact that President Obama is a Christian and an American citizen.
But, like Eric Cantor on the same show three weeks ago, Boehner refused to criticize those looney-tunes Republicans who still insist that Obama is a Muslim – and those Birthers who don’t believe he was born in the United States, and is therefore not a legitimate president.
What’s the deal? Is he afraid of alienating the total fruitcakes in his party?
Instead, Boehner insists that it’s not his job to tell people what to believe. When, in fact, he’s always telling people what to believe about taxes and jobs and health care and immigration and every other issue.
And it is his job to tell screwball Republicans to stop denying the faith and the citizenship of the President of the United States.
But, of course, that would take a real leader.
That’s my parting shot for today.
