You don’t have to be a Biblical scholar…
You don’t have to have a degree in theology…
If you’ve ever even read the Gospels, just once, you know: that Jesus loved, worked for, and spent most of his short time on earth trying to help: the poor.
“If you want to be perfect, sell all you have and give it to the poor,” he advised his followers.
He also told them it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
There’s no doubt, then, that Jesus expected his followers to help the poor, the hungry, and the dispossessed.
That’s the mission of Christianity. Christians call it the “social gospel.”
How bizarre, then, that last week, Glenn Beck told his listeners that the phrase “social gospel” was nothing but code words for “communism.”
In fact, he warned listeners, if you ever hear a priest or minister say the words “social gospel,” you should immediately get up and walk out of the church.
Clearly, Glenn Beck, a Mormon, has no idea what Jesus Christ was all about. Or what Christianity is all about today.
We knew Beck’s politics was sick. Now we know his theology is, too.
That’s my parting shot for today.
