It didn’t get much attention. Probably because it involved such a long drawn-out process.
But it’s now official. That stupid policy called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is finished. No longer exists. Done. Kaput. Dead.
Good. We never should have adopted that set of rules in the first place. And it’s hard to believe somebody as smart as Bill Clinton is responsible.
Don’t ask, Don’t tell was built on a lie: that gays and lesbians could not do the same job in the military just as well as straight men and women. Nonsense.
And it forced people to live a lie: pretending to be somebody else in order to wear the uniform. Which, in itself, was a violation of the military code of honor.
And, as a result, thousands of dedicated, patriotic, talented young Americans were thrown out of the service – only because of their sexual orientation. Which is like throwing out all Jews. Or Catholics.
Even though it took a long time, it’s refreshing to see all the myths about problems with gays serving in the military now totally discredited.
And you watch. Pretty soon, all the myths about same-sex marriage will be discredited, too.
That’s my parting shot for today.
