We all like to escape for a weekend, now and then.
This weekend, Barack and Michele Obama are escaping to Asheville, North Carolina. Believe me, they couldn’t have picked a better place.
I’ve been down to Asheville three times, thanks to our good friends at 880 The Revolution. It’s a great town – and a great place to take the family.
It’s not one of those snooty resorts, like Martha’s Vineyard. Or the Hamptons. Or Sun Valley.
Asheville’s just a little mountain town, but what a gem. Nestled in the middle of the mountains, with a lively and charming downtown – filled with outstanding Art Deco architecture and great restaurants.
Just outside of downtown is the fabulous Grove Park Hotel, surrounded by a first-class golf course, where the Obamas will be staying. That’s where he holed up to prepare for the first presidential debate. And where, no doubt, he eyed that golf course and promised himself he’d come back some day to play a few rounds.
And just a few miles from Asheville is the magnificent Biltmore Estate, the largest private residence in the country, an exact duplica of a Loire Valley chateau.
Mr. President, you have chosen well. I just wish I were going back to Asheville with you.
That’s my parting shot for today.
