What difference does it make who’s on the Supreme Court?
All the difference in the world. And few have ever made more difference on the court than John Paul Stevens. For years, he has been the most consistent, dependable and fearless liberal voice on the court.
And nowhere did Stevens stand taller than in his passionate dissent on the court’s outrageous Bush v. Gore decision. “Although we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year’s Presidential election,” he wrote, “the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the Nation’s confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law.”
The big question now is: Who could ever replace him? And Republicans are already warning that President Obama had better not dare nominate another liberal.
And why the hell not? Conservatives already have four extreme right-wingers on the court: Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, and John Roberts.
Don’t we liberals get to have at least ONE proud liberal?
For all those right-wingers who demand a moderate or, God forbid, another conservative on the court, I have one reminder: Barack Obama won, John McCain lost.
That’s my parting shot for today.
