My impressions after watching President Obama report on airline security at the White House last night?
It’s probably safe to say that government has never moved so fast.
Within two weeks of the attempted terrorist attempt on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day, the Obama administration ordered and completed a complete review of what happened and has already started making changes in intelligence-gathering and airport security to prevent any such screw-ups in the future.
As President Obama said, there is no perfect system. There is no silver bullet. Terrorists might still discover a vulnerability in the system, and try to take advantage of it. But at least we’re on top of it and trying to stay one step ahead of them.
Obama said two other important things, too.
First, he accepted full responsibility for the Christmas Day incident, even though he was far from Amsterdam when Dutch officials allowed that terrorist on a plane to the USA. How long since we’ve heard a president accept responsibility for anything?
Second, he rejected the notion that fighting the terrorists required giving up our constitutional liberties and turning this nation into a police state. Once we do, he pointed out, the terrorists win – and we must not allow that to happen.
In the fight against terrorism, we have a strong and smart leader in Barack Obama.
That’s my parting shot for today.
